However, many standard cabin air filters installed from the factory are primarily designed for dust filtration only – not protection against chemical vapors generated during spraying.

This becomes particularly important during the application of pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and other crop protection products.

While standard dust filters may capture larger particles, chemical vapors and aerosols can still pass through the filtration system and enter the cabin environment.

“Many operators rely on standard dust cabin air filters, but chemicals will pass through during spraying – exposing you to health risks”.

One of the challenges with chemical exposure is that it is often difficult to detect. Operators may not notice unusual smells or visible contamination inside the cab, while still being exposed over long spraying periods.

As awareness around operator safety continues to increase, understanding the role of cabin air filtration is becoming more important across the agricultural industry.

Why Activated Carbon Matters During Spraying

Activated carbon filters are specifically designed to adsorb chemical vapors as air passes through the tractor filtration system. In spraying environments, this additional filtration layer plays a critical role in reducing operator exposure to airborne chemicals inside the cab.

Unlike standard dust filters, activated carbon filtration is developed to address gases and vapors generated during spraying applications. The effectiveness of this protection depends on multiple factors, including:

The quality and type of activated carbon used

The amount of carbon inside the filter

Correct filter fitment and airtight sealing

Proper maintenance and replacement intervals

Only activated carbon cabin air filters adsorb chemical vapors

Independent testing and standards such as EN 15695-2 and USA ASABE S613-3 have helped increase awareness around the importance of filtration performance during spraying operations. Michigan State University has also referenced Purecab activated carbon filters in a respiratory protection toolkit developed for agricultural safety.

 Category 2 & Category 4 Cabins Explained

Cabin classification is often discussed during spraying operations, particularly Category 2 and Category 4 cabs. However, regardless of cabin classification, filtration performance remains a critical factor in operator protection.

Category 2 cabs are primarily designed for dust protection and typically require activated carbon filtration during spraying operations where chemical vapor exposure may be present.

Category 4 cabs are designed for spraying environments and include sealed, pressurized cabin systems. However, their effectiveness still depends heavily on the filter installed – including the quality of the activated carbon filter, proper sealing, airflow performance, and ongoing maintenance.

In both cases, filtration should not be overlooked. A cabin alone does not automatically guarantee protection during chemical application. It is essential to refer to the standard EN15695-2:2017 which is the only authority that relates to the cabin filter standard.

What Operators Should Check Before Spraying

For operators looking to better understand their current level of protection, a few practical checks can help:

Check whether the cab is fitted with a standard dust filter or an activated carbon filter designed for chemical vapors

Inspect filter seals and ensure correct airtight fitment

Replace activated carbon filters according to recommended intervals (e.g. 12 months or 400 hours of spraying)

Regularly inspect cabin airflow

 Watch the Interview

In the video below, Brett Jantzen, CEO of Purecab, explains how cabin air filtration works in real-world spraying conditions and what operators should consider when preparing for spraying season.

As spraying practices continue to evolve, operator protection inside the tractor cab is becoming increasingly important.
